Indo-Thai Mixed Vegetable/Squash Red Curry with lentils and Pearl Couscous

August 17, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Indo-Thai Mixed Vegetable/Squash Red Curry with lentils and Pearl Couscous

You’ve heard it many times, read many experiences and you will hear it many more times.

When I stepped out into the cold chilly San Francisco airport as a new bride, I really had no clue what I was getting into….

I walked into a blank canvas in every sense.  A large apartment with not a chair to sit on.  No pots and pans, no spoons, I felt almost helpless. Really helpless and very thankful because for the name God, I could not make a decent coffee.  Eating out was the only option until I got really bored of it….

Mixed Fruit Jam – And A Trip Down Memory Lane

August 3, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Mixed Fruit Jam with Cocoa - Easy and Delicious

It’s 9.00 a.m.  The sun is shining through the kitchen door.  I see my grandma, Amma as I fondly call her, sitting in her tiny kitchen by her tiny stove cooking away.  My parents and my uncles were getting ready to leave to work.  It was little four-year old me, snaking around the six footers, giving up on them, who landed at a safe spot next to Amma in her kitchen.  Her kitchen, the abode of sweet smells, yummy food and seasoned pickles, was my favorite place too.  I loved to watch Amma do her abracadabra.  Amma noticed through the corner of her eye that I had come close to her for her dedicated attention.  She grabbed me and gave me the most wonderful hug while whispering a secret into my ears.  This afternoon, we were on a mission……  Eventually, the office goers left home, and Amma and I had to leave too.  I know where I will be going, she asked me not to tell anyone.

Instant Savory Vegetable Cake- Handvo

July 29, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Instant Savory Vegetable Cake- Handvo (gluten free)

It is probably the 5557th time he has asked me, “What time is the flight landing?”  The baby bear of our home is a big fan of his dad.  He calls themselves “the twins.”  To him, his dad can’t do anything wrong or say anything wrong.  His trust and love for him is unparalleled.  When I am cross, it doesn’t take him a moment more to say I was wrong.  He’s around his dad every minute possible.  He’s the biggest fan of his dad, and takes every word his dad says to heart, and those are the final words. Imagine a kid who sounds squeaky and loud going daddy, daddy this, daddy that.  It can get quite annoying, but it’s too cute for us not to smile.

Mango-Orange Fizz with Mint-Cardamom and Lemon

July 22, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Mango-Orange Fizz with Mint-Cardamom and Lemon

Being human is like a huge tide.  Some days it’s beautiful, and others it’s terrible.  The brain is crazy and so complicated, and I love it. Life is a journey.  No amount of work or distractions can actually interrupt this beautiful and well desired journey….have you ever searched for a friend?

As I sit with my friend on the stone bench waiting for the last of the musketeer  to come, I watch lots of colors, girls giggling, and a gush of sand rising.  We have to get to our first period, but she hasn’t come yet.  …

30 minute Broccoli Pizza with Roasted Garlic Pesto and Feta Cheese

30 minute Broccili Pizza with Rosted Garlic Pesto-Feta Cheese

“Who puts broccoli on a pizza?!”  If you have seen Inside Out, you probably know exactly what I’m referring too.

We finally got to see the movie Inside Out.  As I was munching on my popcorn, I was oblivious to what was coming next.  I literally spit and started laughing when the broccoli scene came.  It just seemed so surreal.  I don’t want to give away too much in case you plan to watch.

I’m not the biggest fan of animated movies.  I got dragged into this.  I have to say the imagination maestros outdid themselves.  Ah!  The way that the Inside Out writers chose to tell the story is gorgeous, complicated, and crazily imaginative: inside the control room of the protagonist’s mind.  It covers a whole range of emotions and feelings.  It makes you think.

Spicy Mango Masala Chicken

July 3, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Spicy Mango Masala Chicken

There are many words to describe food. Three words to describe this chicken, no cliché here, are  “FINGER LICKING GOOD.”

This recipe was definitely an accident, a happy and yummy accident.

This is a re-post from few years ago. I’ve made it a number of times. Yesterday I made a huge batch of the mango barbecue sauce and decided to click some better quality pictures, if you know what I mean. I haven’t deleted the old post. If you’d like to see the old pictures and how this recipe came to be, here’s the link for the original Mango Chicken.

Lychee-Ginger Lassi and Pineapple Lassi

June 24, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Lychee-Ginger Lassi and Pineapple Lassi

A common summer day, to me, means pj’s, workout pants, and staying in all day procrastinating.  Days start late and run late.  The workout pants are very convenient for regular hikes and runs.  There is no routine and no professionalism, just hanging out and thinking about what to do next.  Sometimes we decide an impromptu drive, a swim, or a movie marathon.  We are regulars to the half price book store.  By the end of summer, we have a huge sale ourselves.  I love summer and hanging out with the boys very much.  Of course, every once in a while, I get bored of this regimen and decide to have friends over.  Summer entertaining is the best.  I get out the frills, the flowers, and a pretty hair do, which is always fun.

Grilled/Baked Chicken in a Tamarind Masala Sauce

Grilled/Baked Chicken in a Tamarind Masala Sauce

Whew, it’s the holidays.  The last two days have been relaxing and a big break from waking up early.  The business of the school year was filled with some challenging and some fun days.  I’m looking to relaxing days,  hikes, and a little bit of traveling.  Most of all, I’m looking forward to doing some impromptu stuff with the family.  Summer in Cali is quite intense.  The last week has been hot.  Our grill, all cleaned up, is ready to work for us.
