5 Deliciously EASY CAKES for Mother’s Day

May 3, 2016 By Asha Shivakumar

5 BEAUTIFUL and Easy Cakes for Mother's Day |foodfashionparty|

Hi my friends,

Some parts of the world celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend.

“What do you want for Mother’s Day?” asked my little one.  To that I thought for a few minutes, and responded, “Nothing, I just want to sit at home, on my couch, in my pajamas, all day, watching movies, eating junk, and most of all, no one asking me anything. Lastly, I don’t want a messy kitchen!” I added quite sternly.

He looked at me like, I just wanted to know what to make for you.  Oh, well.

Pineapple-Coconut Honey Syrup Cake |foodfashionparty|

Happy April!!

I can’t believe we’re in mid April already!

Four years!  It’s been four years and two days since I published my first post.

It is a relationship.  A bond between the writer/creator, blog space and readers/friends.  A relationship I take quite seriously and cherish every bit of it….

Red Bean-Cardamom Buns

February 7, 2016 By Asha Shivakumar

Red Bean-Cardamom Buns. Sweet bread stuffed with Red bean paste. |foodfashionparty| #chinesedessert

What’s your favorite dessert?

I couldn’t pick just one.  It’s coffee cake one day, falooda another, or a simple gulab jamun, which I always love.

While San Francisco is famous for it’s Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars and earthquakes, it’s also very famous for its restaurants. There are no words to describe the popular sourdough of San Francisco, it’s amazing. The food truck festival is a very popular one.  The Ghirardelli ice cream is just to die for. My mouth just waters with the memory of the English muffins from Model bakery. Ahhh, so good. Little Italy has some beautifully created dishes as well. While burritos are considered sacred here,  Chinese food is like an institution. We have some very very popular chefs who have great restaurants, and I’ve been to a lot of them.  It is a food heaven filled with culture and beauty.

Cashew Linzer -Sandwich Cookies

December 15, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Cashew Linzer -Sandwich Cookies @foodfashionparty

Sometimes, you have such a great idea that you think you’ve almost won a lottery with  it. A few days ago, I had an idea….

Sitting on my dining table, with a hot cup of coffee in one hand and typing in the other. I typed in ‘snowflake cutters’, and there it was at William-Sonoma website.  I added it to the bag, quickly forgetting about it, as I had lots to do that day.  After a couple of days, I was watching my favorite Vlog on YouTube, when I saw an ad of those same snowflake cutters staring at me.  It’s funny how the advertising agencies can monitor all your Internet activities.  And, of course, it’s showing me the thing that I wanted to buy. Weird.  I finally went ahead and ordered and waited for it for 4 whole days.  They came on a Thursday, so pretty and screaming at me to use them soon.  My idea: making Lintzer cookies with the snowflake cutter.  The bottom cookie would be a round plain one and the top would be this gorgeous snowflake like cookie dusted with powdered sugar and jam peaking through the tiny little cutouts.  They looked perfect in my mind.  I didn’t see anything like that on Pinterest or anywhere. They definitely are going to be stunning. Oh well, I thought it would be stunning.

Balsamic Spiced Mixed Nuts

Balsamic Spiced Mixed Nuts- Indian Spices and Vegan

Christmas is  just around the corner. It will come by, before we know it and will pass by in a blur. The journey during December is a beautiful one.

Amidst all these you guys, it’s been a tough last 4 weeks for a place very dear to my hubby and a lot of people who belong to Chennai.

I met my husband in Chennai Airport for the first time.  A memorable moment that I will never forget. What Chennai and the 6 million people in it won’t forget is, what they saw and experienced in the last few weeks.

Sesame-Almond Apple Cake

Sesame-Almond Apple Cake

Have you ever asked yourself, “If I were to re-live the last 10 years, would I do some things different?”  I definitely ask myself that sometimes.

We rush to achieve perfection in everything, and try to juggle a ton of stuff when all we can do is manage one.  After all, we are just human.  I would like to change small things.  I didn’t have to vacuum everyday.  I didn’t have to buy that perfect gift and drive around 4 hours to find one.  I really didn’t have to eat that whole bag of chips (although I enjoyed it then).  I would’ve loved to visit family back in India more often.

Quick Pumpkin Butter with Cardamom and Ginger – Pull apart Bread

Pumpkin Butter with Cardamom - Pull apart Bread

It is the season of festivals for Indians.  Starts around September and goes on till mid November.

‘Ayudha Pooja’, that’s what we celebrate in the Southern Part of India this week.  It is a very interesting festival.  Ayudha means weapons/instruments.  On this day, we pay our respect to all the regular household items we use.  Knifes, screw drivers, hammer, calculator, you name it, if we can keep it for prayers, we will.

Pesto with Candied Balsamic Cashews on Focaccia

October 14, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Pesto with Candied Balsamic Walnuts on Focaccia

We still are wearing our open toed sandals and sundresses.  I think we are going to jump to Winter, skipping Fall.  There is not a lot of foliage here.  The only sign of fall are the squash and pumpkins.
I miss the chill, we need some rain.

On the bright side, I found some beautiful tomatoes in Cali and it’s crazy 91 degrees.

30 minute Broccoli Pizza with Roasted Garlic Pesto and Feta Cheese

July 16, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

30 minute Broccili Pizza with Rosted Garlic Pesto-Feta Cheese

“Who puts broccoli on a pizza?!”  If you have seen Inside Out, you probably know exactly what I’m referring too.

We finally got to see the movie Inside Out.  As I was munching on my popcorn, I was oblivious to what was coming next.  I literally spit and started laughing when the broccoli scene came.  It just seemed so surreal.  I don’t want to give away too much in case you plan to watch.

I’m not the biggest fan of animated movies.  I got dragged into this.  I have to say the imagination maestros outdid themselves.  Ah!  The way that the Inside Out writers chose to tell the story is gorgeous, complicated, and crazily imaginative: inside the control room of the protagonist’s mind.  It covers a whole range of emotions and feelings.  It makes you think.

Spicy Mango Masala Chicken

July 3, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Spicy Mango Masala Chicken

There are many words to describe food. Three words to describe this chicken, no cliché here, are  “FINGER LICKING GOOD.”

This recipe was definitely an accident, a happy and yummy accident.

This is a re-post from few years ago. I’ve made it a number of times. Yesterday I made a huge batch of the mango barbecue sauce and decided to click some better quality pictures, if you know what I mean. I haven’t deleted the old post. If you’d like to see the old pictures and how this recipe came to be, here’s the link for the original Mango Chicken.
