Serves: 4
Ingredients
  • Dry green peas - ½ cup soaked overnight or for ease use frozen large peas
  • 4 papadam - toasted over flame or microwave. Deep fried is even tastier
  • 2 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 small red onion, very finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • ⅓ tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tomatoes pureed
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup water or you could use coconut milk for extra richness
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • cilantro to garnish and some green chilies
Instructions
  1. Soak the dried green peas in 3 cups of water overnight. Next day, cook the peas over stove top which will take an hour or more or Cook in pressure cooker for 3 whistles with some salt. You could also cook this in an instant pot. Once it's cooked, set aside.
  2. Take a sauce pan or a large pot. Keep it on medium heat, add the oil. Let it get hot, add the cumin seeds and let it brown and toast a bit. Add the onions and saute for about 1 minute before adding the ginger garlic, turmeric, chili powder and saute for another minute until the raw flavor of the ginger garlic goes. Add the tomato puree and sugar. Saute this for about 5 minutes on medium to low flame. Add 1 cup of water and garam masala. Simmer this for another 5 minutes. Add the cooked green peas and simmer and boil for 2 minutes. Now add the papad which is toasted or deep fried, break it apart and add it. Boil for 3-4 minutes. If the liquid is getting too thick, add another cup of water. Toss in some cilantro. Turn off the heat and serve hot with rotis or chapathis.
