SKILLET CORNBREAD with Jalapenos and Chives

November 22, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

Skillet Cornbread with Jalapenos 1

It is Grandma’s Recipe and it is GOOD.

My trainer, he is something.  He loves food, and gets excited when I bring him lemon cupcakes, his favorite. I sometimes wonder how he enjoys his desserts and competes in body building competitions.  Well he does believe in moderation and asks me to enjoy everything.

We have a mutual love for food. And yes, we do talk about food every once in a while when training. Hey, when I am working my shoulders, the thought of a good bread afterwards is the only thing which makes me finish my sets.

  SPICED PEPPER PUMPKIN DINNER ROLLS-1

Do you watch cooking shows guys? Anything particular you like?
We are officially addicted to ‘Cutthroat Kitchen’.  Has anyone seen it? It’s Alton Brown hosting the show and I love him.
Can you imagine cooking with shears?, seriously, how do they even come up with concepts like that.  So many sabotages, curve balls and a lot of cash involved.

Mocha Walnut Bread 3

Somethings are great in theory.
Like the Mazda Miata I wanted. Can you imagine driving the kids and carpooling?..NO, so not practical.
Like the beautiful apple tree we bought and thought that we would see apples in couple of years, it’s got the same number of leaves on it as the day we bought it.
Like the good intention to wake up at 4.00 a.m. for my workout.
Like the time we wanted a dog.  We dog sat our friend’s little shih tzu and we loved him.  Just that he loved my sandals too, he would nag us to take him out every time.  I love animals, but in no rush to get one.

Do you have a green thumb??

If you do, I admire you and if you don’t I’m secretly happy;).  I hear about homegrown tomatoes, chilies and fruits being so tasty and my friend even grows sugar cane, CRAZY…Why does it come so easy to some and here I am with a single leaf Banana tree which has been alive for 4 years with only couple of leaves present all the time.  I water it, ummm, maybe not all the time..But it hasn’t dried up on me yet, that’s the bright side.

ZUCCHINI PIZZA WITH GREEN CHUTNEY

July 7, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

“You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I’m not hungry enough to eat six.”- Yogi Berra

                Hi there friends, HAPPY SUNDAY!!

Zucchini Pizza1

The story of two hours minus the boys.

Today,  our home was silent from all the hustle and bustle from the kids.  It’s been a
while.  I remember  years ago, that a two hour drive, watching a movie and discussing it later was a norm.  The paradigm totally shifts once you have kids, we love all the chaos, but a controlled environment is fun too for couple of hours.

Focaccia with Grapes and carrots.

June 20, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

“If thou tastest a crust of bread, thou tastest all the stars and all the heavens.” – Robert Browning

Focaccia with Grapes and carrots. Easiest recipe for focaccia. |foodfashionparty|

Fresh baked bread at home in India is not some we saw a lot of.  Flatbreads like Chapathi, rotis, paratha and many were common but yeasted bread was something we got in bakeries.  Bakery breads were simply amazing.  Moving to California where there is so much diversity in food and it’s cuisine that my love for food just quadrupled(and more). San Francisco is known for their Sourdough, some of the best I’ve had.

Pepper Spiced Bread- Iyengar Bakery style Buns

May 12, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

“The smell of good bread baking, like the sound of lightly flowing water, is indescribable in it’s evocation of innocence and delight”. M.F.K. Fisher
Pepper Spiced Bread Roll

Walking down a bakery creates a sensory overload, especially when we’ve had a long day.  Mom would come home in the evening  passing this Iyengar Bakery(a famous bakery in the southern part of India, which is still very famous for their special baked goods), and she often would buy the Masala Bun or Bread.  The two other members of the house were not fond of bread, then why?, I used to think then.  As time passed , I realized my mom loved a good hearty spicy bread/bun.

You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I’m not hungry enough to eat six. Yogi Berra

April 21, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

Recently, I had reasons to do some research on the ubiquitous Pizza. I was amazed to find how ancient the concept of pizza is!! The common history of the birth of the pizza, as a popular dish, is a romantic story of how a poor man’s meal became the comfort food of the high and mighty and the prosperous and has since become a truly democratic dish!

What I also discovered in my scouring was that the term “pizza” has been prevalent as early as 997 A.D but wasn’t even given the status of being an edible dish until much later. It was initially a baker’s tool used to verify oven temperature!!
