GIFT BASKET-Hot Chocolate gift basket

December 9, 2014 By Asha Shivakumar

GIFT BASKET-Hot Chocolate gift basket

We are a bunch of hot chocolate lovers. Now, that comes with its own disadvantages. The drink has to be a certain consistency; the teen needs it a bit bitter, and the little one needs it lighter. So my hot chocolate is always a bit on the thicker side.

This recipe is quite a rich chocolate drink and quite an indulgence.

ALMOND AND SAFFRON VALENTINE PIES

February 12, 2014 By Asha Shivakumar

ALMOND AND SAFFRON PIES

Friendship Day was the most popular college celebration I knew of when I was growing up.  Seriously, I never celebrated Valentine’s Day until the last year of my graduation. It was so interesting and fun to see girls buying cards for their Valentine. They got so giddy over it!

On Valentine’s Day, you could see girls dressed their best. They wait for their Valentine to come with red roses.  Few guys did come, and the rest were jealous.  The four(my friends and I) did not have much excitement on the day and tried to get past the day without being too embarrassed or annoyed. This happened for years.

CARDAMOM PUMPKIN HALWA with ALMOND CREAM TRIFLE

November 25, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

Pumpkinpie Trifle 1

One of my favorite festivals after I came here is Thanksgiving. There’s something about everyone getting together, cooking, sitting down for a big spread and saying Thanks.
Reminds me a lot of our festivals back in India.

I’ve been reading a lot of blogs about how they are going to celebrate Thanksgiving.  What is the one thing you really look forward to on Thanksgiving day?  I would love to know. Do you celebrate it the traditional way? DO YOU LIKE TURKEY?

  SPICED PEPPER PUMPKIN DINNER ROLLS-1

Do you watch cooking shows guys? Anything particular you like?
We are officially addicted to ‘Cutthroat Kitchen’.  Has anyone seen it? It’s Alton Brown hosting the show and I love him.
Can you imagine cooking with shears?, seriously, how do they even come up with concepts like that.  So many sabotages, curve balls and a lot of cash involved.

SQUID INK PASTA WITH FENNEL,GARLIC AND BASIL

October 23, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

SquidInkPasta3

I was scared by a person wearing a monkey paper mask when I was 12. That’s the most a scary costume could get in those days. It was called ‘fancy dress competition’ growing up, wasn’t a big deal. I remember one year couple of my friends and I decided to be the cha cha dancers, a day before the competition.  All we did was wear long flowery dresses and a plastic flower pinned to the side of our hair. It was darn cute but so silly.

Do you remember your most memorable Halloween costume?

Spicy Mango Masala Chicken

September 29, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

There are lot of words to describe food and 3 words for this chicken, ‘FINGER LICKING YUMMY’.

Mago Chicken 1

This recipe was definitely an accident, a happy yummy accident.

A few years ago, I had some mango puree sitting in the fridge after the mango lassi I made yesterday. I could never eat the norm, had some chicken drummets too. Mango chicken, why not right? Sounded great.   After making a quick sauce and cooking the chicken, I gave it a try, and it as pure deliciousness.  Definitely reminded me of something I ate years ago….

SPICED POMEGRANATE SIMPLE SYRUP

September 24, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

Cocktail 1

Are we  close to October already? How did that happen? Just seems like we welcomed summer and now it’s orange everywhere. Just a few weeks ago, we celebrated birthdays, woke up late, made ice cream, barbecued, vacations and slept late(the best part).

Here we are on the thresh hold of holiday season, and I am not ready  for it, are you?  I hear friends have started shopping for Halloween, then comes thanksgiving and a ton of baking.  Clearly, I need a drink.

PANEER TIKKA with YOGURT MINT SAUCE

September 20, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

Chili paneer kababs1

I happen to love paneer (non melting, unaged, farmer’s cheese).

Growing up, I don’t remember mom cooking much paneer (cheese). It was something that we ate at restaurants.

As a South Indian our diet mostly consisted of rice, lentils, vegetables, and chicken. Paneer/cheese was considered ‘North Indian food’.  So when we wanted to eat, we would go out to a restaurant for a treat, and what a nice treat it was.

BUCKWHEAT/FLAX SEEDS SPICY CRACKERS with GRILLED GOLDEN BEET DIP/HUMMUS

August 20, 2013 By Asha Shivakumar

Crackers2

I am not Vegan.

I eat gluten in some form every day.

Healthy food habits…not all the time.

We do go sometimes Vegan for a week, just to see how it feels. Being a South Indian, rice is a huge part of our daily meals, we naturally follow a gluten free diet to a certain extent.

Now about eating and following a healthy lifestyle, wish I was more consistent with it.  We eat quite healthy, actually very healthy, but after a good healthy meal, we go out for  Gelato:). My new favorite flavor FicoPistachio, oh yum.
OK, I don’t eat ice cream everyday, but I need a sweet something after dinner time.  Do you crave a dessert after your dinner?
