Often in our culture, we don’t open the door to difficult conversations with our parents because the value of respecting our elders can be taken to mean never disagreeing with them openly. I had parents who were slighty above the average when it came to what I wore.   Piercings were considered ok, even a beauty for a women. I was nonplussed. Practically every female relative I had wore a nose ring, it was considered both aesthetically pleasing and an auspicious thing to do.

But tattoos? That felt incredibly transgressive in the culture I was raised in….

Easy Homemade Crackers and Cheese Gift Box idea |#homemadecrackers #christmasgiftidea #cheeseboardJump-to-Recipe

I don’t think I’m alone in falling back on cliché to express what has, for the most part, felt inexpressible. The unprecedented. The thing to do, I guess, is parse what I really mean when I fall back on the clichés that have come to define this very strange time.

What’s not strange is the love of home made food that has grown hundred fold. People have started making sourdough, yogurt, spiced crackers and more.

These spiced easy crackers have been made quite a lot of times at home. They are healthy and you can make it your own by adding any flavorings. What I love during the holidays is to make a cheese board gift box or basket with crackers, Santé Candied Pecans, and cheese.…

Kanchipuram Idlis with Millets / Millets Kotte Kadbu

December 8, 2018 By Asha Shivakumar

Soft & Spongy loaded with spices is a healthy breakfast.  This recipe of millets idli is a mix of kanchipuram idli and Kotte Kadbu, the spices come from Kanchipuram idli and the shape comes from Kotte Kadbu from Karnataka region.  It makes for a great anytime meal.

Kanchipuram Idlis with Millets / Millets Idli- Kotte Kadbu |foodfashionparty| #milletsidli #southindianfoodDriving through Bangalore highways, passing through mountains that are brown and rocky is an experience in itself.  While traffic inside the city can go at snail speed, the drivers take every opportunity to speed through the impressive four lane highway.  The highway that connects Bangalore to Mysore is called Nice Road, and was made only a few years ago.  It’s a boon.

After a couple of hours of drive, we stop by this popular highway restaurant.

We enter the crowded restaurant.  The air is filled with the smell of spicy sambhar and ghee.  Some are dressed in elegant sarees ready to go to a wedding, some are casual like us, like how we feel.  Everyone seems to be excited for their destination….

This is a month of celebration.  Celebration of a woman.  Goodess Durga in all her forms.

Entire India will celebrate Navaratri and Durga Pooja. Celebrating the victory of good over evil.

Everyone celebrates festivals for different reasons.

And when people do draw a boundary between spirituality and religiosity, they are often making a political or moral statement rather than describing what they believe.

To me, festivals have a deeper meaning….

Crusty Cauliflower Pasta Bake with Peppery Almonds Manchego Crust -GF

October 11, 2018 By Asha Shivakumar

With just four ingredients, you have the best cauliflower pasta bake ever.  The sauteed cauliflower feels decadent with spicy almonds in this crunchy baked pasta. You can cook this over the stove top, or bake it. Be careful not to overcook your pasta, as it will continue to cook in the oven.

Crusty Cauliflower Pasta Bake with Peppery Almonds Manchego Crust -GF |foodfashionparty| #cauliflowerpastabake #pastabake This pasta bake is just the kind of thing for these dark and dreary days. It’s warm, crusty, and soul-satisfying. Yet it’s full of healthy ingredients. Chickpea pasta, crushed cauliflower, and a good peppery almond crust.

The pasta is a vessel that holds the cauliflower and with every bite, you get a bit of the creamy from the cauliflower and crunch from the almonds….

Gluten Free Millet Roti – Softest and Easy Rotis

October 8, 2018 By Asha Shivakumar

Two ingredients, one important step, and you have the easiest and softest gluten free roti there is.  This gluten free roti stays soft for two days if wrapped well.

Gluten Free Roti with Millets - Softest and Easy Rotis |foodfashionparty| #glutenfreeroti #glutenfreeflatbreadThe minute I posted my quick naan recipe, I started getting requests for a fail-proof roti.  I somehow missed sharing wheat rotis.  I’ve been on a gluten-free journey the last couple of months and have been experimenting with different grains.  We make rice roti which is gluten-free.  However, it is a bit thick and heavy and hence doesn’t really go well with sabzis. So, when I started sharing my experiments on social media with whole grain rotis, I have had a sea of requests for a foolproof gluten free roti that stays soft for a long time….

Instant Paniyaaram with Millets & Vegetables -Tomato Chutney

October 6, 2018 By Asha Shivakumar

Gluten-free and vegan, a healthy and tasty snack, this instant paniyaaram only takes about half an hour. Loaded with vegetables, made with millets, and with protein from the peanuts, it makes for an easy and healthy after-school snack or is great for school lunchboxes.

Instant Paniyaaram with Millets & Vegetables - Tomato Chutney |foodfashionparty| #southindianfood #paniyaaram #foodphotographyI’d mock my mom when I saw her cook with millets, oats, and whole grains. She’d slyly put a handful of millets in our pongal, or add some oat flour in the roti batter.  We never realized healthier ingredients went into our food, but it did. But, every moment dad and I saw her sneak it in, we’d roll our eyes.  Yeah… well, here I am living in the very world I lovingly mocked.

Who am I?  I can’t believe the day has come that I’ve become my mother. I’m making millets paratha, quinoa pongal, chocolate oatmeal…  And, I’m loving it. The family loves it too.  Well, maybe not the whole family. The little baby bear will come around, just like I did.  Or at least I hope he will 🙄 . He’s got a tongue just like his mumma used to….

Multigrain Seed Fig-Nuts Energy Bread

March 25, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

Multigrain Seed Fig-Nuts Power Bread

Tucked in between the jalapeno bread, onion bagels, and dinner rolls in the fresh baked section in my neighborhood grocery store is this rectangular piece of bread which reads ‘Energy Bread.’  A few years ago I bagged a few, and I have been a regular customer of this energy bread since.  I cannot promise that your energy will go up after eating this, but I do like the wholeness, the texture, and the mild sweetness of the bread.

I was inspired and had to recreate it. How difficult could it be to bake them right?

HARISSA-MANGO PANEER AND PEARL BARLEY-DILL SALAD

January 17, 2015 By Asha Shivakumar

HARISSA-MANGO PANEER/HALOUMI AND PEARL BARLEY-DILL SALAD

This month was my whole grain month. As I measured out the barley to cook that morning, I did not realize that I had to be creative about how I made use of it for the next three days.

Little did I know that after you have a decent portion of this grain, you won’t be hungry for hours. But isn’t that a good thing? Oh well, maybe. For me, it was ok. So, long story short, I cooked 4 cups of barley which turned out to be around 8 cups of cooked barley.  The kids were very apprehensive at the sound of the grain but it turned out they enjoyed it especially when I paired it with something they love….
